dreams tempered with wisdom

Austin Hill reprinted the email he received from President Obama on the 4th of July this year. Within that letter is the following:

"And as America comes ever closer to achieving the perfect Union our founders dreamed"

Right there is a fundamental misunderstanding, or (more likely) a willful misinterpretation, of America's founding.

The Founders did not dream of Utopia. They did not believe they were setting the groundwork for a "perfect Union". They certainly did not believe the Constitution was merely a set of guidelines from which America would begin, as Obama's actions clearly demonstrate he believes.

No, our Founders were Christians who believed in the Fall of Man and realists who acknowledged that humanity will always be flawed. They believed that all governments, including the one they began, have a natural tendency to drift toward either dictatorship or anarchy. Read The 5,000 Year Leap and you'll see this in their own words.

The U.S. Constitution was written in response to tyranny... which is to say that it was written in response to the natural and inevitable corruption of the human heart and our limited wisdom. It was also written with hope and faith in the inherent beauty of human beings. Its authors were plainly aware, as evidenced through their own words, that neither corruption and foolishness nor beauty and wisdom can ever be completely struck from individuals or from the social systems those individuals comprise.

Furthermore, America's Founders believed that what progress which could be made would be made apart from government, not through it. They expressly asserted that government must be limited to only protection of the most basic individual rights and the facilitation of states' rights. They perceived government as a necessary burden with which one should never be comfortable.

In his actions, Barack Obama proves to be the antithesis of America's founding principles. The longer he, his fellow liberals, big-government Republicans and other cowardly politicians remain in power, the farther we will drift from the Founders' true dream... a dream in which America is defined by its individuals and its culture, rather than by its government.

clarity with Notre Dame

This controversy with Notre Dame can be made much clearer than it has been in mainstream media reports and interviews.

The Church believes that abortion is the killing of human children. President Obama supports the killing of millions of children. Notre Dame cannot honestly claim to represent the Church's teachings while awarding an honor to someone participating in such extreme evil.

That's it. It's that simple. By simply understanding that the Church perceives Obama as a powerful supporter of infanticide on a massive scale, it becomes obvious that Notre Dame cannot honor Obama without rejecting its Catholic identity.

fascism on the rise everywhere

This article on censorship and diversity policing in Britain is insane!  If half this stuff is true, I fear for my British friends. I've read about similar things happening in Canada and Australia over recent years, but the stories in the article are particularly bad. The same movement has been occurring here in the States, of course, but we're not so far down that road.

Censorship of this kind rises through social rules and business regulations before it becomes law. In the U.S., making a joke at work about a college team or about sailors or something might get you a disapproving look, but making a gay joke will get you fired. If a white guy gets into a bar brawl with another white guy, it's an assault charge at most. But if it's a white guy and a black or gay guy, then it's a hate crime. Fascism seems to be on the rise all over the world. In the West, it's liberal fascism.

You know, Hitler was involved in public service projects, too. He commissioned the Germany's highway system, the Autobahns. He employed people and created activities for the youth. Fascism often gets associated with right-wing ideologies these days, but many dictators have been of a liberal bent. Hell, Hitler was a painter, and we all know how artists tend to be.

When I see Obama being more than civil to people like Hugo Chavez, it doesn't give me hope for America's future.

Obama and North Korea

As I responded to Kathleen Parker's recent article, Obama is not the big dog who needn't bare his teeth. The general perception of Obama is that he is a European-style leader. European leaders are notorious for empty threats and a willingness to accept peace under any circumstances.

When Russia militarily expanded into South Ossetia, Western Europe said "No, no, no!" and wagged its little finger. And that's it. Months later, all is forgotten. History is repeating itself, and Obama has yet to prove he is not Chamberlain.

I don't claim to know how Obama should respond to North Korea's missile test. But we can be sure that our enemies, even the insensible ones, are familiar enough with history to know that military potential does not equal a threat. Yes, America has the world's greatest military might, but the willingness to employ that might and the circumstances under which we will do so changes from age to age and from politician to politician.

This far into Obama's presidency, there is nothing to suggest that we will not join the United Nations in their belief of peace at any cost. There is nothing to suggest we will not accept peace without justice or that we will support our allies. America's commitments and resolve must be reasserted with each new administration. That doesn't mean entering war. But it does mean, at the least, blunt and direct diplomacy... leaving no room to question our commitments.

Make no mistake... Obama has yet to be truly tested. Russia will seize more territory. Their flights from Cuba will come mockingly close to our airspace. And our many enemies worldwide are strengthening their alliances. A storm is coming, and just how bad that storm is when it arrives will depend largely on how much time we give it to strengthen.

the bow

It's astounding to me that Obama would deny bowing to Saudi leader when he knows video clearly shows him doing so (from multiple angles, no less). The White House apparently claims he was just leaning down to shake the hand of a shorter man, but King Abdullah certainly ain't that short. And Obama's is facing the ground when he grabs the king's hand, not facing the king. It's obviously, undeniably a bow.

Honestly, the bow by itself doesn't mean much. Any Christian knows he or she should be the humble servant of every fellow human being.
If Obama bowed to all foreign leaders, I would consider it noble and right. To do so would not suggest that the President does not recognize his responsibility to protect our nation's sovereignty. One can be both a dutiful politican and a humble servant of God.

But Obama didn't bow to everyone. He bowed to a single leader: the Saudi King.

So the very reasonable question is: Why bow to him, specifically? What did Obama consider special about King Abdullah? I've heard speculation, but the hard truth is that nobody knows. No matter what the reason, though, it's a valid cause for concern.

And that Obama denies the event event took place should make reasonable people question his motivation for hiding the truth.

permanent takeover

It's now being said on some talk shows that Obama's administration is selecting new board members for General Motors.

Do you understand the full significance of that? It means the government's takeover of the company is permanent. By firing the company's top decision-makers and choosing the replacements, Obama is ensuring that he will maintain control of the company even if the government officially returns it to private operation.

Now, there can be no return to the GM of old. The company belongs to liberal politicians. The change is permanent.

Our democracy is dying.

ignore AIG

Folks, all this yelling about AIG bonuses is a ruse. It's an intentional distraction.

By now, you've probably already heard or read that the same politicians who are screaming bloody murder knew about the bonuses and even protected them with legislation months ago. This is being made into a public controversy only to distract us from bigger issues, like the avalanche of government spending and Obama's foreign relations fiascoes.

Forget about AIG for now. Concentrate on the bigger fish.

masterful stroke, Rush!

Today, Rush invited Obama to engage in debate with him on his show. If Obama or even just a significant percentage of his allies truly believe that Limbaugh is the de facto head of the Republican Party or Republican constituency, then it goes without saying that the President must converse and/or negotiate with Rush to maintain even a semblance of bipartisanship.

Well played, Rush. Well played.

Of course, ultimately, this doesn't really matter. Obama and his liberal allies, including the media, will scoff at Limbaugh's proposal. And Obama's supporters won't be swayed at all by the President's blatant dishonesty. Afterall, it's not as if they don't already know Obama's a liar and manipulator, though they'd deny it. They likely think the end justifies the means.

legislation without debate

It just keeps happening. Obama and other Democrats keep making substantial changes to vital policies of every kind without any discussion whatsoever. They compile dozens of disparate issues into one bill and then speed it through a vote.

Folks, this is just a couple short steps from dictatorship.

If Rahm Emmanuel really does manipulate the Census to gerrymander to his liking, then our elections will be as fake as Venezuela's. While Congress follows his every whim, the only balance to Obama's power is the barely-conservative Supreme Court.

Obama and his fellow liberals have already made irreparable changes to this nation. Future presidents can't undo his massively wasteful spending. Government programs and offices are rarely dismantled after they have been created. How much further this will go, I don't know, of course. But we're teetering on the edge of fascism here.

control isn't just ownership

So the federal government now owns a larger portion of Citibank shares.

As this progresses, remember that Obama never lets all of his cards show. The government doesn't have to own more than 50% of a company's shares to control its direction entirely. All that's necessary for such control is for the government to be joined in ownership by liberal allies with similarly large investments.

And that doesn't apply only to company takeovers. In health care reform, in energy initiatives, in trade and countless other matters, allies of Obama and the far left didn't stop being allies when Obama entered office. Jeffrey Immelt, George Soros, and other such industry leaders have much political strength to offer.

This isn't conspiracy theory, by the way. It's Sociology 101. Friends help friends. Like-minded people work together to achieve common goals. You can bet Obama isn't trying to achieve his political goals with only the aid of fellow politicians. Watch for sympathetic activities in industry, in the arts, etc.

Also, I highly recommend Folsom's book, New Deal or Raw Deal. I'm only part-way into it, but already it's been extremely enlightening. You might be amazed how similar Obama's presidency has been to FDR's (and that's not a compliment). No two moments in history are exactly the same, but this book will certainly help you understand where our nation is headed.

faith-based hospitals in danger?

So what do you think the federal government will consider "appropriate and cost effective" health care?

Cal's certainly correct that widespread euthanasia will be a consequence. I suspect that abortions will also be facilitated. This is the modern eugenics. People will be murdered with government aid every day, and most of the world will turn a blind eye.

But there's another element here. This is where the attack on orthodox religions becomes less covert. Hitler started with the Jews (and remember... it started as oppression, not as slaughter). Obama will begin with the Catholic Church.

When gay unions were legalized in Massachusetts, it wasn't long before a Catholic adoption agency was told it could not operate unless gay couples are eligible to adopt. The agency shut down, rather than ignore the principles on which it was founded. Yesterday, Star Parker wrote about a man in California who has been convicted for standing across from an abortion clinic with a sign reading, "Jesus Loves You & Your Baby, Let Us Help You", and offering pro-life literature. Let me repeat: a man is going to jail for a sign about "Love" and "Help".

That's how Obama and liberals will move against the Church and others. There will be no law mentioning any group specifically, but the government will set standards that demand Christians do not live as Christians, that Jews do not live as Jews.

Obama has already spoken of one such standard. He has proposed that religious charities cannot receive government aid unless their hiring practices do not discriminate by beliefs. In other words, a charity may be founded on a particular set of principles, but cannot hire only people who agree with those principles and still receive aid. Of course, in practice, this law will force liberals into conservative organizations but not conservatives into liberal organizations.

Now, the "stimulus" bill's changes to health care regulation will threaten religiously grounded hospitals and other health services. What happens when a Catholic hospital refuses to participate in euthanasia or abortions?

My guess? The smaller ones will shut down as they are stripped of licenses and funding. The largest hospitals, most vital to city order, will be seized for the government to operate how it pleases. Others will compromise their principles, choosing to participate in occasional murder so they can continue general treatment. However it happens, it's not a pretty picture.

So what can we do?  When the first hospitals are threatened by government mandates, how can we stand by them? To be honest, I don't know. We can write to the hospital administrators to let them know that their not alone, to ask them to be courageous. We can pray for God's counsel and strength. But beyond that...

Obama's magical mystery tour

It's too early to know whether or not this decision by Obama to go on the road -- rather than, you know, actually work from the White House -- is indicative of his presidential style. He's not even a month into office yet, so I'm not sure what the early media tour means. Of course, my hunch is that this behavior epitomizes the President's political philosophy, which has been demonstrated time and again over the past year: perception is everything.

The heart of Obama's power rests in his ability to woo and deceive the public. He's not going to simply negotiate with Congressman, administrators, companies, or any other group. He's going to bully them into submission through manipulation of the mob. When he's not fingering their wallets, Obama's whispering in the ears of their constituents, their employees, their consumers. His campaign never really ended.

Conservatives need to be campaigning also... and not as groups, but as individuals.

Much of the reason we're in this mess is that generations of Americans have been taught to focus on distant politicians instead of their neighbors, on institutions instead of persons, on laws instead of values. We're lost in abstracts and representations, forgetting that it's all merely instrumental to the real stuff of life: human relationships.

Most Americans call themselves Christians. Why do you think that Jesus, a Roman citizen with access to the ears of politicians, never appealed to a government official?  Crowds of people followed Him from city to city, yet when did Jesus ever even suggest to those crowds that they should appeal to their governors?  When did He lead them to protest? When did He tell them to demand anything of anyone?  There's no record that Christ even made a political appeal to his fellow Jews (the Sanhedrin)!

Jesus was not ignorant, nor dismissive, of government and social problems. No, He fought for change, but He fought in a way which bears no resemblance to the protests, the petitions, the marches, and the loud complaints of modern Americans. How did Christ bring justice and goodness to the world? He focused on individuals. He focused on changing hearts, one at a time. And He did so, not as an organized effort, but as an ordered way of life... a way of being in every moment, with every person.

How do we fight Obama and the crazed liberals? By focusing on the individuals right in front of us and directly around us. Any system is only as good as the people running it -- that includes capitalism and democracy. Change the people, and the system will reflect their virtue.

Obama will continue to ascend

Today, I watched Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck dispute whether or not the inevitable economic fallout from the recent "stimulus" bill will hurt Obama's popularity. It won't. In fact, Obama's popularity is likely to increase.

The most obvious and compelling evidence for that claim is FDR's presidency. America's economy only worsened during Roosevelt's presidency, and yet he remained so popular that he was reelected twice! He served longer than any other president in our nation's history, and is generally remembered today as one of our greatest presidents. Again, the economy did not improve under Roosevelt, yet American voters didn't turn on him.

Why not?  I'm no historian, but I know of at least two factors. First, FDR was an exceptionally skilled and charismatic orator. Second, he bought affection with pork projects for interest groups.

That should sound familiar.

Obama is a charmer and master manipulator. The complete lack of substance in his campaign and his supporters' willingness to overlook the most blatant lies demonstrate the charismatic power Obama has over the American public. He just pushed Congress to pass a "stimulus" bill that offers little stimulus, a bill that not one Congressional representative has read entirely, a bill of unprecedented size that we must pay for with money we don't have (thereby depreciating the dollar to a dangerous degree)... and yet he has the support of half the nation in doing so! A hundred obviously separate issues were legislated into a single bill and passed with little to no discussion -- that's called dictatorship.

This is only the beginning of the spending packages. TARP 2 is already in the works, and you can bet that Obama will be injecting it with more federal control. Obama will keep liberals in his pocket with pork and one-sided mandates for years to come.

Have I mentioned how terrorists might strengthen Obama's chokehold on the public? Numerous persons from intel backgrounds have suggested that America is likely to experience another major terrorist attack on home soil within the next few years; even within the next few months. If we are struck again, it's a certainty that Obama will gain power from it. Presidents always gain power after a direct attack on America, because leadership is vital during a crisis like that. And let's not forget that Obama proposed a domestic military force, nor his proposal that all citizens participate in mandatory (changed to voluntary, post-election) community service.

The bottom line is this: Obama is a man out for power. He has it, and he'll gain more over the next few years.

Our only hope -- aside from God, of course -- is for conservatives like O'Reilly to accept that America is not unbreakable. This is a great nation, but we are not immune from tyranny or de facto revolution. Americans must believe that events of historic proportions and terrible nature can occur during their lifetimes and at home. Obama is gaining a dangerous level of power, and we won't be able to resist his manipulations if we don't even acknowledge that power.
